Scholarships

The Ontario Food Protection Association acknowledges the contributions that students have made to the food safety profession in Ontario.  To encourage students to enter the food safety profession, the OFPA Academic Awards Program annually provides:

  • Centennial College Student Food Science Award: $1000 + Certificate
  • Durham College Student Food Science Award: $ 1000 + Certificate
  • George Brown College Student Food Science Award: $1000 + Certificate
  • Ryerson Polytechnic University Student Food Science Award: $1000 + Certificate
  • University of Guelph Student Food Science Award: $1000 + Certificate
  • University of Guelph Graduate Bursary in Food Safety: $2500 + Certificate
  • University of Guelph OFPA FSQA Scholarship: $2000 + Certificate
  • University of Guelph J. D. Cunningham Memorial Travel Award

Additionally student members of OFPA whose abstracts are accepted for presentation at the IAFP annual meeting will receive $500.00 towards travel to the meeting from OFPA. Information concerning IAFP and the annual meeting can be found on the IAPF website.

How to apply: Selection done by the Faculty/ Members of the School of Engineering Technology, based on the student's average along with recommendations from Teachers
Qualifications for this award: Awarded to a third-year Biological Technologist - Industrial Microbiology student who has maintained a `B' average, and has shown academic proficiency in microbiology and/or chemistry, course work, especially in areas related to food
Amount: $1000.00

Name of Award: Ontario Food Protection Association Scholarship
Deadline for Application: April 1st, each year
How to apply: Apply to student financial services using the `undergraduate incourse scholarship application' available from student financial services or U of Guelph website
Qualifications for this award: Majoring in Food Science, entering last year of studies (semester 7) with a minimum cumulative average of 70%. Priority is given to students who have demonstrated academic proficiency in quality assurance and who have participated in extra-curricular activities.

University of Guelph

Name of Award: Ontario Food Protection Association FSQA Scholarship (Replaces Millennium Scholarship)
Deadline for Application: Varies with each year, usually the first week in September
How to apply:

Send in application. Application is to include:

1.A brief cover letter, including phone number and address

2.Summarize the proposal or work report to a maximum of 10 pages. Describe the project by outlining the purpose, methology, discussion, conclusions and next steps

3.Describe your role in the proposed work. Please include your research supervisor's name, phone number or email address.

4.How and to what extent will the project enhance food safety in Ontario? Who will benefit from this work?

Qualifications for this award:

Awarded to a graduate student in the Food Safety and Quality Assurance program who has maintained a cumulative average of 75% or higher who are planning to pursue research or a self directed learning project on advances in food studies with emphasis on food safety with an industry, government organization or association partner

University of Guelph

Name of Award: J. D. Cunningham Memorial Travel Award
Deadline for Application: April 1st  
How to apply:

Applicants must submit a letter, no more than 2 pages, to the OAC awards Office outlining intended study program / conference or other type of learning opportunity, reasons for choosing the program and the anticipated benefits of participation.  Letters of recommendation wil be considered as part of the application package 

Qualifications for this award: Students currently enrolled in any OAC undergraduate degree program with a minimum of 75% cumulative average who want the travel to support course related studies.  selection wil be based on the travel request benefits to the individual applicant and leadership potential based on information submitted in the application.  Preference will be given to students majoring in food science or microbiology.
