The Ontario Food Protection Association acknowledges the contributions that students have made to the food safety profession in Ontario.  To encourage students to enter the food safety profession, the OFPA Academic Awards Program annually provides:

  • Conestoga College Student Food Science Award: $1000
  • Centennial College Student Food Science Award: $1000
  • George Brown Student Food Science Award $1000
  • University of Guelph JD Cunningham Scholarship in Food Safety & Quality Assurance $2000
  • Durham College Student Food Science Award: $ 1000

Conestoga College

Name of Award: Ontario Food Protection Association Award
Deadline for Application: Award recipients are selected in February for awards to be distributed in March.
How to apply: No application required from students. Faculty select students annually based on the criteria described below.
Qualifications for this award: Criteria:
  • enrolled full time in the Food Safety and Quality Assurance program
  • the highest average in the class
  • the best project related to Food Safety
  • the most complete and accurate HACCP-based Food Safety plan.
Amount: $1000.00 - typically split into 2 x $500 awards

Centennial College

Name of Award: Ontario Food Protection Association Award
Deadline for Application: No deadline for application. Students are nominated by teachers.
How to apply: The School of Engineering, Technology and Applied Science will select the candidate, followed by verification from Student Financial Services.
Qualifications for this award: The recipient must be:
  • Enrolled Full-Time during the Fall Term
  • Enrolled in the Food Science Technology (#3620) program
  • Must be a 3rd year Student in the Fall term
  • The recipient will be the student who best meets two of the three following criteria:
    • (1) has the highest mark in the course related to Food Safety (including Food Safety and Food Microbiology),
    • (2) submits the best project related to Food Safety,
    • (3) has the most complete and accurate HACCP, based on Food Safety plan.

Name of Award: Ontario Food Protection Association - JD Cunningham Scholarship in Food Safety & Quality Assurance

How to apply: No application required from students.  Faculty select students annually based on the criteria described below.
Qualifications for this award: The award is given to the student with the highest grade in FSQA *6000 Food Science Communication during the previous Summer and Fall offerings. The student awarded the scholarship will be encouraged to present the results of their research at the OFPA Fall meeting in the year following receiving the award.

Full-time students registered in the MSc. Food Safety and Quality Assurance Program who have completed FSQA*6000 (Food Safety & Quality Assurance Seminar) in the previous Summer or Fall
