List of Scholarships

The Ontario Food Protection Association (OFPA) acknowledges the contributions that students have made to the food safety profession in Ontario. One of the goals of the OFPA is to award scholarships to numerous major educational institutions in Ontario to contribute to the pursuit of food technology education and food safety academic excellence. To encourage and support students who are pursuing a Food Safety Profession, the OFPA Academic Scholarship Program annually provides scholarships as follows:

  • Conestoga College Ontario Food Protection Association Scholarship: $1000
  • Centennial College Ontario Food Protection Association Scholarship: $1000
  • George Brown College Ontario Food Protection Association Scholarship: $1000
  • University of Guelph Ontario Food Protection Association Scholarship: $1000
  • Durham College Ontario Food Protection Association Scholarship: $1000

Conestoga College

NAME OF SCHOLARSHIP Ontario Food Protection Association Scholarship - Conestoga College
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION Scholarship recipients are selected in February for scholarships to be distributed in March
HOW TO APPLY No application required by students. The faculty selects students annually based on the criteria described below.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP Criteria:

  • Enrolled fulltime in the Food Safety and Quality Assurance program (Post Graduate Program)
  • Highest average in the class
  • Best project related to Food Safety
  • Most complete and accurate HACCP-based Food Safety Plan
AMOUNT $1000.00/year (typically split into 2 x $500 scholarships)

Centennial College

NAME OF SCHOLARSHIP Ontario Food Protection Association Scholarship - Centennial College
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION No deadline for application. Students are nominated by teachers.
HOW TO APPLY The School of Engineering, Technology and Applied Science will select the candidate, followed by verification from Student Financial Services.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP The recipient must be:

  • Enrolled Full-Time during the Fall Term
  • Enrolled in the Food Science Technology (#3620) program
  • Must be a 3rd year Student in the Fall term
  • The recipient will be the student who best meets two of the three following criteria:
    • has the highest mark in the course related to Food Safety (including Food Safety and Food Microbiology)
    • submits the best project related to Food Safety
    • has the most complete and accurate HACCP, based on Food Safety plan.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS In 2019, OFPA signed a 3-year commitment letter for the OFPA to commit to a $1000 scholarship each year for 3 years.

George Brown College

NAME OF SCHOLARSHIP Ontario Food Protection Association - George Brown College
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION Students would apply on-line in the Fall.
HOW TO APPLY Applicants must apply online. Section process for this award will be conducted by the Awards Office. This award will be adjudicated by the Centre Hospitality and Culinary Arts Awards Section Committee.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP The recipient must be:

A full-time student at the Chef School within the Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts at George Brown College with the following criteria:

  • Student is enrolled in one of the following programs:
    • Food and Nutrition Management (H402) (Postgraduate)
    • Honours Bachelor of Commerce (H315) (Culinary Management)
  • Student has a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Student demonstrates a commitment an spirit of dedication to their choose area of professional study.

University of Guelph

NAME OF SCHOLARSHIP Ontario Food Protection Association - University of Guelph
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION No deadline for application. Students are nominated by teachers.
HOW TO APPLY No application required by students. The faculty selects students annually based on the criteria described below.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP The award is given to the student with the highest grade in FSQA*6000 Food Science Communication during the previous Summer and Fall offerings. The student awarded the scholarship will be encouraged to present the results of their research at the OFPA Fall meeting in the year following receiving the scholarship.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP Full-time student who is studying food safety or other food and beverage related programs. Awarded to the student with the highest overall marks in the last year of their specific program.
